Best Budget Launch Monitors: Four Under £1,000

Under a thousand pounds the hardware is genuinely capable and the honesty is not. Every unit here reports numbers it did not measure, and knowing which ones is the difference between practising usefully and chasing an estimate.

A launch monitor under £1,000 used to mean a device that guessed. It no longer does: the hardware at this price now reads ball speed, launch angle and direction properly, and two units here read the club as well. What has not improved is the disclosure, and every device on this page prints numbers it worked out next to numbers it measured.

The four, compared

Two sensing approaches are in play. Radar bounces a Doppler signal off the ball and watches it fly, which needs depth behind the golfer. Cameras photograph the ball at and just after impact, which needs almost no depth but no flight to watch either. Two units here combine both, which is the interesting development at this price.

Space needed is the specification that decides whether a unit fits your room, and only two of these four print it. Where it says not published, the maker does not state it and no figure has been borrowed from anywhere else.

The ceiling here is £1,000 and it is the whole premise of the page. Prices in this category move further and faster than anywhere else in golf, and the same unit appears at list and at a third off within the same month, so check the maker's own page before buying. The Rapsodo MLM2PRO pairs dual optical cameras shooting at 240 frames per second with Doppler radar processing, and reports fifteen metrics: ball speed, club speed, launch angle, launch direction, carry distance, total distance, spin rate, spin axis, club path, angle of attack, smash factor, descent angle, side carry, apex and shot type.

Camera plus radar in one box is the combination that normally starts several thousand pounds higher. The camera handles what happens at impact, where a radar has almost nothing to look at, and the radar handles the flight, where a camera has stopped watching. At this price it is a genuinely unusual specification.

VerdictThe most capable unit under £1,000 and the one to buy if you want club delivery numbers as well as ball flight, because nothing else at this money reads both. The catch is the balls: without RPT you have a launch monitor that estimates spin, and spin is the parameter most worth measuring.

Rapsodo also do the thing most of this category avoids, which is publish the room requirement in plain feet. Outdoors the unit sits 6.5 to 8.5 feet directly behind the ball on the target line. Indoors they ask for a little over fourteen feet in total, which is eight feet from ball to net plus the 6.5 to 8.5 feet behind. That is inconvenient and it is honest, and it will disqualify a lot of garages before anything else about the device matters.

The catch is the balls. Spin rate and spin axis appear only with Rapsodo's own RPT balls, and the maker states plainly that ordinary golf balls will not show those numbers. That is a permanent running cost and, more awkwardly, a permanent restriction on which ball you can practise with, which is not nothing if you have spent time choosing one.

Garmin Approach R10: the cheapest capable unit

The Garmin Approach R10 is a Doppler radar unit that sits behind the golfer, rated IPX7, running up to ten hours on an internal rechargeable cell, and naming fourteen metrics: club head speed, club face angle, club path angle, angle of attack, ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin axis, spin rate, apex height, smash factor, carry distance, total distance and deviation distance.

Ten hours of battery and an IPX7 rating are what make it a different proposition from the rest of this page. Every other unit here is fundamentally a bay device that can be taken outside. The R10 is a range device that can be brought inside, and a full afternoon of practice without a charge is the specification that makes that true.

VerdictThe best value on this page and the obvious first launch monitor for someone who practises outdoors, because ten hours of battery and an IPX7 rating make it a device you take to the range rather than one you set up at home. Indoors it needs room it does not tell you about, and its spin numbers are modelled.

What Garmin do not publish anywhere in the specification block is a minimum room dimension, which on a radar unit is the number a buyer most needs. Radar has to sit behind the golfer and needs the ball to travel far enough to be tracked, and the absence of a stated figure means you are sizing your room from someone else's blog post. It is a strange omission on an otherwise well documented product.

Voice Caddie Swing Caddie SC4 PRO: five feet and no phone

The Voice Caddie Swing Caddie SC4 PRO is a K Band 24 GHz Doppler radar unit, 4.88 by 7.59 by 1.14 inches and 20.79 oz, running about ten hours on a charge that takes six hours to complete, sitting five feet behind the ball on the same level as it, and reporting carry and total distance, swing speed, ball speed, smash factor, apex, launch angle, launch direction and spin rate.

Five feet is the shortest published radar requirement on this page and it changes which rooms are possible. Rapsodo want up to 8.5 feet behind the ball. Voice Caddie want five. In a garage that is often the difference between a workable bay and a project you abandon.

VerdictThe right unit for a golfer who wants numbers without a setup ritual, because it stands up, switches on and works with nothing else involved. Buy it understanding that it is a ball-flight device: it will tell you how the shot behaved and not what the club was doing when it left.

The other thing it does differently is work on its own. There is no phone in the loop for the basic function, which means a practice session does not end because a screen went to sleep or an app dropped its connection. What you give up is the club side entirely: eight metrics, all of them about the ball, and nothing about path, face or attack angle.

Rapsodo MLM1: the entry point

The MLM1 is the cheapest device here by a wide margin, pairing an iPhone camera with radar processing to report up to eleven core metrics, with swing replay and shot trace video, indoor and outdoor use, and spin available through Titleist RCT balls.

At this money it is a reasonable answer to a real question, which is whether ball speed and launch angle are worth seeing at all before committing to a bay. Shot trace video is the feature owners actually keep using, because a traced ball flight is intuitive in a way a table of numbers is not.

VerdictThe honest entry point, and a genuinely good one if you already own an iPhone and want to see ball speed and launch angle rather than guess at them. It ranks here because the platform restriction rules it out entirely for a large share of buyers and no specification can compensate for that.

It ranks last for one reason that no specification can offset. It is iOS only, and Rapsodo say so plainly: an iPhone or iPad is required. For a household without one, that is a hard block rather than an inconvenience, and it is the kind of restriction that gets buried in a bullet list rather than stated at the top of a listing.

What a budget unit actually gives up

This is the section worth being blunt about, because the marketing at this price is careful rather than false.

The single biggest gap is spin from an ordinary ball. Two of the four units here need specially marked balls to show spin at all, and a radar unit measuring spin off a plain ball in a few feet of indoor flight is attempting the hardest measurement in the category. Above £2,000 that gets easier, and even there it is not universal.

The gap that is not real is distance. Carry and total distance are modelled outputs on every launch monitor at every price indoors, because the ball hits a screen after a few feet and nothing watched it land. Paying more does not turn a modelled carry number into a measured one. What every parameter actually means works through the whole list properly, and spin rate is the one most commonly misread.

The accuracy claims, and what is behind them

Accuracy is where this category is at its least honest, and the pattern is consistent from £200 to £4,000.

Makers describe their units by comparison rather than by tolerance. Phrases like tour level accuracy, or precise to within a few yards of professional units, are comparisons to an unnamed reference under unstated conditions, and nobody can check them. A tolerance would look like a stated plus or minus figure for a named parameter under named conditions, and it is very rarely published at any price.

The reference the industry orients itself around is TrackMan, which describes its own technology as optically enhanced radar tracking and publishes definitions for more than forty parameters. Those definitions are worth reading whichever unit you buy, because they are what every other maker's parameter names are copying, and knowing what club path or spin axis is defined as tells you whether a number is plausible.

Figures like "within one mile per hour" circulate constantly in this category and are almost never traceable to a published manufacturer tolerance. Where a number like that appears without the maker's own specification behind it, treat it as marketing that has been repeated until it sounded like data.

How much room you need

Room depth is where most budget launch monitor plans quietly die, and at this price it is decided almost entirely by the sensing technology.

Radar sits behind you. Rapsodo publish 6.5 to 8.5 feet behind the ball outdoors and about fourteen feet in total indoors. Voice Caddie publish five feet behind the ball. Garmin publish nothing. That means an indoor radar bay realistically needs somewhere between fourteen and twenty feet front to back before you have allowed anywhere comfortable to stand.

Ceiling height disqualifies more rooms than depth does and nobody publishes a figure for it, because it is your swing rather than the device that sets it. The practical order is to measure the ceiling, then the depth, then shop. Setting up a home simulator covers the room side properly, and practising golf at home covers what is possible when the room is smaller than any of this.

You will also need somewhere for the ball to go. A net and a mat are not optional extras on an indoor setup, they are half the cost of it, and the net options and hitting mats compared both matter more to how much you practise than the sensor does.

What it costs once you own it

The purchase price is roughly two thirds of the decision at this level, and the running costs are structured very differently across the four.

Rapsodo gate software features behind a membership after a 45 day trial, and both their units need specially marked balls to show spin. Garmin ask for a Garmin Golf membership for simulated course play across their 42,000 courses. Voice Caddie state no membership for the core function and include an E6 Connect licence with five courses and a driving range.

Over three years those differences are larger than the differences in sticker price. A device with no subscription and no special balls can be several hundred pounds cheaper to own than one that is cheaper to buy, and none of that appears on a comparison chart. Work it out before comparing anything.

Where you can and cannot use one

There is a rule attached to all of this and it is short.

Is one worth buying at all?

The honest answer depends on what you would otherwise spend the money on, and it differs from the same question about a rangefinder.

If what you actually want is a single number, the cheapest devices in this space do only swing speed and cost a fraction of any of these. How to measure swing speed covers those. What to spend

Within this ceiling the money buys clearly separable things.

  • £170 to £200: a real sensor with a short metric list, a platform restriction, and video that is genuinely useful. Enough to answer whether you want one of these at all.
  • £460 to £480: fourteen named metrics, long battery, weather sealing, and radar that needs room the maker may not tell you about.
  • £550 to £650: camera and radar together, club delivery data, published room requirements, and specially marked balls as the price of spin. A standalone radar with the shortest room requirement here and no membership sits at the top of the same band.

Above £1,000, the next real step is a unit that measures spin from an ordinary ball and publishes a room requirement, and that is roughly where this page stops.

Will a budget launch monitor improve my golf?

It will if you use it to change something measurable. Strike quality, launch angle and spin respond to practice and are the numbers worth chasing. Watching a modelled carry figure go up and down teaches very little, and a device bought to confirm how far you hit it usually ends up in a cupboard by the second winter.

Do I need a net and a mat as well?

Indoors, yes, and they are not a footnote. A net and a mat together often cost as much as the sensor, and they are what decides whether you actually practise. Outdoors on a range you need neither, which is one reason a weather-sealed unit with long battery life is worth more than its specification sheet suggests.
