A high handicapper buys golf balls more often than any other golfer, and gets less back from the expensive ones. The cover has to survive a thinned wedge and a cart path, the flight has to curve as little as possible, and the price has to survive losing several a round. Everything else on a ball's specification sheet is a benefit that arrives later.

The gaps in that table are the story. Bridgestone and Callaway both decline to state what is inside their ball, which means the only two things you can genuinely compare across all four are the colour options and the price.
Bridgestone e12 Straight: built to curve less
The Bridgestone e12 Straight sits inside a three ball family that Bridgestone fit on launch conditions rather than on swing speed. The other two aim at carry and at a piercing flight. This one aims at reducing side spin, and Bridgestone describe the goal as reduced hooks and slices.
That is a narrower claim than it sounds, and it is the right one for this page. A ball cannot straighten a swing path. What a low side spin design does is reduce how far a given amount of curve carries the ball offline, which turns a shot that finishes in trees into one that finishes in rough.

The Vice Tour is a three-layer ball with a mid-acid ionomer cover, 312 dimples, a size-optimised High Energy Speed Core, and a published compression of 85. That last item makes it the only ball on this page you can select on a stated number rather than on a description.
Three layers with an ionomer cover is an unusual combination and a sensible one here. The casing layer gives the designer some separation between driver spin and wedge spin, while the cover stays tough enough to shrug off the strikes that define golf at this level.

What they are not open about is anything else. No layer count, no dimple count, no compression. At this price that is a lot to take on trust, and the benefit being sold is greenside spin, which is the last thing a high handicapper develops the ability to use. What each layer actually does sets out where the money goes in a ball's construction.
The sum that actually decides your ball budget
This is the part a golf shop has no reason to work through with you. The cost of a ball is not the price on the box, it is the price divided by how many holes it survives.
Not every troublesome tee shot costs you the ball. Plenty are found. But the arithmetic still runs in one direction, and it is worth seeing written down.

Now multiply the right-hand column by a season. Thirty rounds losing three balls each, at four pounds a ball, comes to three hundred and sixty pounds, which is more than the cost of a wedge. The same season on a pound fifty ball is a hundred and thirty five. That gap is the single largest equipment decision most high handicappers make without noticing they are making it.
What actually ends a golf ball's life
Not fatigue. A two-piece ball struck two hundred times does not go soft, and the core does not degrade over a season. What ends a ball is a scar on the cover, and there are three ways to get one.
The thinned wedge is the first and the most common. Catching a ball above its equator with a sharp leading edge cuts a crescent into the cover, and once it is there the ball no longer flies symmetrically.
Cart paths and rakes are the second. A ball that ricochets off concrete comes back with a flat graze on it. The third is the mower, which nobody sees happen but which explains a proportion of the found balls that never quite go straight.

The practical rule is simple. Retire a ball when the cover is visibly cut rather than on a schedule, and if you are cutting covers regularly, the answer is a tougher cover and not a more careful swing.
One thing a damaged ball does not stop being is legal. The R&A's Rules of Equipment set limits on weight, diameter, initial velocity and total distance, and none of them are breached by a scuff. A cut ball is playable in competition and simply flies less predictably, which is a worse problem than an illegal one.
Driver spin is the one performance argument that survives

TrackMan's published spin benchmarks put the average male amateur, at roughly a 14.5 handicap, at 3,275 rpm of driver spin against 2,545 rpm on the PGA Tour. A 10 handicap sits at 3,192 rpm and a scratch player at 2,896 rpm. Read that column downward and the pattern is a straight line: spin rises as handicap rises.
Amateurs do not have a spin shortage. They have a spin surplus, and that surplus is what makes a drive climb, stall and curve. A low spin ball removes a small part of it, which is a real if modest gain, and it is the only thing on a ball's specification that pulls in the right direction for a golfer at this level. How much does the ball actually matter?
Less than the sentence above suggests, and far less than the marketing does. At 1.8 greens in regulation a round, the greenside control that separates a fifty pound box from a twenty five pound one is being tested twice in eighteen holes.
That is not an argument for playing badly made balls. It is an argument for spending the difference somewhere it works harder. A lesson, a lie angle check, or twenty minutes a week on the shots that produce the 6.5 troublesome tee shots will move a score in a way no box of golf balls has ever managed.
