Golf Club Distance Chart: The Numbers That Are Real
Almost every distance chart online is invented. This one is built from tracked amateur shots, it says where each number came from, and it leaves a cell empty rather than filling it with a guess.

Type this question into a search bar and you will get twenty charts that agree suspiciously closely with each other and cite nothing. Most are copied from each other, several are quietly describing tour professionals, and almost all of them fill in numbers nobody has ever measured. Here is what tracked amateur golf actually shows, where each figure came from, and what to do about the rest.
The chart, and what is actually in it
The most complete amateur distance table published anywhere sorts golfers by the score they shoot, which is convenient, because almost everyone knows that about themselves without needing a handicap index.

Both columns come from Shot Scope's benchmark data, and the second one is the interesting half. Between a golfer shooting in the 90s and one shooting in the 80s there are 11 yards of driver and 1.8 greens a round. Distance is real, and it is not what separates those two players.
Split the same database by handicap and add the only other club with a published amateur figure:

All distances in yards, and all of them performance averages, which is Shot Scope's metric for a well-struck shot with the extremes at both ends stripped out before averaging. A topped drive and a career best both stay out of your number.
The scratch figure comes from Shot Scope's scratch benchmark, the 20 handicap from their 20 handicap benchmark and the 25 handicap from their 25 handicap benchmark. The all-golfers row for both clubs comes from Shot Scope's comparison of driver against 3 wood, drawn from 80 million tracked shots, which also found the driver hitting the fairway 46.6% of the time against 47.4% for the 3 wood. Twenty two extra yards for eight tenths of a percent of accuracy is a decent argument for hitting driver more, not less.
Why there is no row for your 7 iron
Because nobody has published one, and filling it in would mean inventing it.
Shot Scope and Arccos hold the two largest datasets of tracked amateur golf in existence. Arccos reports over 1.5 billion shots across 25 million rounds, with their 2026 report alone built on more than 5 million rounds and nearly 10 million driver tee shots. Shot Scope's platform has passed 460 million shots. Both publish freely, and what they publish in depth is the driver, because that is the number the golf world asks about. Neither puts a club-by-club amateur grid on its own site.
There is a second reason such a row would be shaky even if it existed. Iron lofts are not standardised and have been strengthening for twenty years, so one manufacturer's 7 iron can be a full club stronger than another's. Standard iron lofts sets out how far the category has drifted. An average built across thousands of golfers playing sets that differ by five degrees describes a club nobody actually owns.

Tracked distances include roll, launch monitor numbers do not
This is the biggest single reason people think a chart is wrong about them.
A GPS shot tracker records where a shot started and where it finished, so the distance it reports includes every yard of roll. On a firm summer fairway a driver can run 20 yards or more. On soft ground in February it can run none. A launch monitor reports carry instead, which is the distance from the ball's start to where it first returns to the height it was struck from.
The two are not interchangeable, and the gap between them is largest with the longest clubs. TrackMan's published averages put PGA Tour driver carry at 282 yards and LPGA Tour carry at 223. Those are professionals, so they are not a target for anyone reading this, but they are a useful reminder that a 282 and a 285 in two different tables are measuring different things.
A second database, and the same answer
Arccos works from an entirely separate set of golfers and lands in the same place. Their tracked rounds put the median drive at 226 yards and the median 3 wood at 214, within a yard of Shot Scope's driver figure. Their wider stats put the average 10 handicapper at 226.6 yards off the tee against a PGA Tour average of 298.4.
Read those alongside the table rather than inside it. Arccos averages every drive a golfer hits, while Shot Scope's performance average removes the extremes first, so the two are measuring slightly different things and an Arccos figure will usually look lower for the same standard of player. Two independent databases agreeing to within a yard on the average golfer is worth more than either of them alone.
The 2026 Arccos report also records a 63 yard spread between elite amateur men and golfers above a 30 handicap, with low handicappers keeping tee shots in play 88% of the time while the 30-plus group finish in a penalty area or a recovery situation 45.1% of the time. In both databases the better player's real advantage is where the ball finishes rather than how far it went.

Why your approach shots finish short
If a distance chart is meant to help you choose a club, this is the number that matters more than any yardage.
Shot Scope's iron play data tracks how often approach shots finish short of the green, broken down by handicap, and the pattern is brutal. A scratch golfer leaves 37.6% of approaches short. A 15 handicap leaves 55.5%, a 20 handicap 62.5% and a 25 handicap 69.7%. Greens in regulation follow the same line: 62% for a scratch player, 23% at 15, 16% at 20 and 9% at 25.
More than two thirds of a 25 handicapper's approach shots never reach the putting surface. That is not only a strike problem. It is a golfer quoting the best 7 iron they ever hit and then hitting a normal one.
Clubhead speed is what sets the numbers
Distance is downstream of speed, and speed is measurable in ten minutes at most golf shops. TrackMan publish benchmark clubhead speeds by handicap, which is the cleanest way to see where you sit.

Those figures come from TrackMan's published club speed benchmarks. Notice how compressed the middle is. A bogey golfer and a 10 handicap are three miles an hour apart, yet the driver table above separates the 90s and 80s shooter by 11 yards. Strike quality, not raw speed, is doing most of that work.
Speed also decides whether your equipment is helping. A shaft too stiff for your swing costs distance across the whole bag rather than in one club, which is why which shaft flex you need is worth checking before you conclude any chart is unfair to you.

Build your own chart
Nothing above beats twenty minutes of measurement, and since the industry has never published the rest of the bag, this is the only honest way to fill it in. Your numbers change with the ground, the weather, the ball and the month, and knowing them is the difference between choosing a club and hoping.
Two conditions distort the answer badly enough to be worth naming. Range balls are typically shorter and less consistent than the ball you play, so a range figure is a floor rather than a true number. And a downwind shot on a firm fairway flatters a club considerably, which is how one memorable 8 iron becomes the number a golfer quotes for the next decade.

Using the numbers on the course
Three habits turn a distance chart into shots saved.
Play to your average rather than your best, since most amateurs already finish short more often than not. Treat the front of the green as your target rather than the flag. And when a yardage falls between two clubs, which happens constantly, take the longer one and swing it softer.

Why does this chart not list every club?
Because the two companies tracking amateur golf at scale publish driving distance in depth and do not publish a club-by-club grid on their own sites. Filling those cells would mean interpolating between real numbers and presenting the result as data, which is what almost every other chart online does.
Are these carry distances or total distances?
Total, including roll. A GPS tracker measures where the ball finished, not where it landed. Launch monitor charts quote carry instead, which is why the same golfer can see two different numbers for one club and assume one of them is broken.
Why is my distance shorter than the chart says?
Usually because you are comparing a normal shot against your best one, or soft ground against firm. Conditions, temperature, ball choice and wind move these numbers a long way, and an average of thousands of golfers has half of them below it by definition.
How much distance is there between each golf club?
For your bag, whatever you measure. The frequently repeated ten yard rule is a convenient simplification rather than a measured fact, and it breaks down badly around the wedges, where modern strong iron lofts have opened a much wider gap than the four or five degrees found elsewhere in the set.
Does swing speed determine how far I hit it?
It sets the ceiling, and strike quality decides how much of it you get. TrackMan's benchmarks put a bogey golfer at 92 mph and a 10 handicap at 95, a difference of three miles an hour, yet those two golfers are separated by considerably more than three yards a club.
How do I measure my own club distances?
Hit five normal shots with one club, throw out the longest and the shortest, and average the remaining three. Use measured targets or a rangefinder, allow for range balls flying shorter than course balls, and repeat once a season. Write the results on a card and keep it in the bag.
Should I use a distance chart to pick clubs on the course?
Only your own. A generic chart is useful for understanding the shape of a bag and useless for choosing between an 8 and a 9 iron on a specific shot. Play to your average with a normal swing, and take the front of the green as your reference rather than the flag.
Why do I hit some clubs the same distance?
Usually because two clubs are close enough in loft that the ball cannot tell them apart, or because a longer club is harder to strike centrally so the extra loft never pays off. It is the most common reason a long iron gets replaced by a hybrid, and it is worth checking against your own measured ladder rather than assuming.
